Anadromous: There and Back Again, 2017

Pence Gallery, Davis, CA

Anadromous: There and Back Again, a solo effort, exhibited at the Pence gallery in Davis CA in 2017. The show was a further reflection on themes of life, inheritance, and lineage previously exlplored in Old Growth and Burial Ground. The show consisted of three large kinetic sculptures along with smaller supporting works and videos.

Old Spawn is a reflection on life cycle and the relentless passage of time. This work combines video elements from Spawning Ground, which is a meditation on new life, and the mummified trout from Burial Ground, which is a reflection on death. This work combines the whole life cycle into one work with the constant movement of time represented by sand sliding through glass tubes as the large spinning wheel turns.

Old Spawn

Submerged takes the viewer directly into the riverbed home of a salmon. Redwood shavings from the process of hand-planing all the wood elements in the previous work Spawning Ground, are constantly churned and dropped in the spinning drum while a video projected from behind creates a pseudo-holographic salmon image swimming upstream to spawn.

Other works in this series include: Twitch, river water pumped through a hose with a video projection of the Mendocino Coast’s Navarro River, where the water was collected, Jawbone, and video documentation of the underground mummification process of a trout from the work Burial Ground.
